Covid – 19 Cybersecurity Best Practices – Being Aware of Stimulus Scams
Covid – 19 cybersecurity best practices include remaining vigilant for stimulus money scams. As you know, with the recent passing of the Covid – 19 relief package criminals may be trying to alleviate you of your relief funds. With this intention, criminal are using email, text messaging and phone calls to contact you. Therefore, we are supplying you with a few tips to help you be aware.
You Don’t Need to do Anything!
First of all, there is no sign up process. With this in mind, do not give out personal information to “sign up” for your relief money. Consequently, anyone asking for your personal information, such as, social security number, PayPal account or bank information is a scammer. Likewise, stay alert for email phishing scams pretending to be from the government asking for personal information. The government will not email you.
Stay Vigilant
Second, if you filed taxes for 2018 and or 2019, the federal government likely has the information it needs to send you money. In this case, this would include your direct deposit information. By all means, only communicate with the IRS if you you are needing to set up direct deposit. Of course, this is only necessary if you did not give the IRS your direct deposit information on your 2018 or 2019 tax return.
By the way, no one has early access to this money. So, anyone claiming otherwise is a scammer.
