Sun Lakes Arizona – What exactly IS Active Adult Living?
It’s not as black and white as you may think. I have had clients say “I’m not sure I’m ready for active adult living just yet.” Really, why not? You would be surprised at the number of people who think active adult communities are old people sitting around telling stories with oxygen tanks attached. So exactly what IS active adult living? It is a community of people who have similar interests and who can age with an active adult lifestyle. Sun Lakes Arizona is a prime example. People who enjoy a lifestyle – not just a home are drawn to active adult communities.
Retirement Communities
There are a number of different concepts in age restricted communities.
- Independent living communities, which offer no personal care services.
- Congregate housing, which includes at least one shared meal per day with other residents.
- Mobile homes or RV’s for active adults.
- Subsidized housing for lower income older adults.
- Leisure or lifestyle oriented communities or LORCs, which include various amenities.
- Continuing Care Retirement Communities.
For purposes of this blog we are talking about the first – independent living communities that offer no personal care services but have resort amenities. In other words, an age restricted community comprised of single family homes and villas with one attached wall separating the two units and amenities that include golf, tennis, swimming fitness – hence the active adult term. Dell Webb opened Sun City Active Adult Community in 1960 and today over 100,000 people call that home. EJ Robson is another major developed of active adult communities in Arizona with the communities of Sun Lakes, Pebble Creek, Sunbird, Robson Ranch and many others.
Sun Lakes Arizona
Sun Lakes is conveniently located in the East Valley of Phoenix bordering Chandler. Close to all major freeways including the I-10, the 101 and the 202 and just a half hour from Sky Harbor International Airport and Mesa Gateway Regional Airport make this a top choice for active adult living in Arizona. With just under 10,000 homes in five separate communities you can find a home in every price point. The three newest communities – Palo Verde, Ironwood and Oakwood Country Club are gated. Sun Lakes Country Club and Cottonwood are not.
Amenities
What can you expect to find in Sun Lakes Active Adult Communities? 99 holes of golf, 27 tennis courts, 12 swimming pools, fitness centers, parks, lakes, walking paths, restaurants and social groups such as hiking and biking clubs, camera clubs, quilting and arts and crafts groups. There is something for everyone. If you enjoy volunteering, Neighbors Who Care is a great organization that assists with those who cannot get out themselves. You can deliver a meal or be a driver. There are service clubs such as Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions Clubs.
Real Estate
What can you expect to find in housing? Single family homes are the most common. Sun Lakes Country Club, the first community has some manufactured housing. Cottonwood and Oakwood Country Clubs also have villa living – two units side by side with one shared attached wall. Those are great for “lock and go” seasonal residents. A separate homeowner association fee covers all exterior maintenance of the unit and landscaping so you literally just lock up and go when you re ready to leave and let someone else worry about the yard, roof and exterior painting.
