February temperatures are ideal for hiking with cool mornings and warm afternoons. Light breeze and abundant sunshine in the middle of winter is the envy of most in the United States and Canada. Saguaro Cactus Facts
The Saguaro cactus blossom is the Arizona state flower. The Saguaro is indigenous to the area and grows to a height of forty to fifty feet and lives to an age of 150-200 years. It is the largest cactus in the world.
Saguaro’s can take up to 75 years to grow a side shoot or arm.
A cactus is considered an adult when it is 125 years old.
Flowers appear on the Saguaro when it is 35 years old.
The cactus will have holes cut out by birds. These holes were used at Native Americans as water containers.
Because the Saguaro consists mainly of water, an adult can weigh up to 8 tons!
Hiking Trails Near Sun Lakes
The photo above was taken on the Butcher Jones Trail at Saguaro Lake just north of Phoenix Arizona. Sun Lakes Realtor and resident John Kolb hiked this 5.4 mile hike with Sun Lakes friends Bob and Mary Figgis who winter in Arizona. The photo to the left was from an earlier hike at Massacre Falls near Apache Junction. There are many small groups that gather to enjoy the desert beauty. You can also hike the 48th Street Trail, the Arizona Canal Trail and many others nearby.
