Fun Thanksgiving Day Facts
In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated on the final Thursday of November. Correspondingly, In 1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed it to the fourth Thursday of the month. Therefore, giving more shopping time until Christmas. Albeit, the change of date was intended to help bring the country out of the Great Depression.
In reality, Canadian Thanksgiving was before American Thanksgiving by 43 years. Be that as it may, the first American Thanksgiving in 1621 was at the Plymouth Plantation, in Massachusetts.
Mary Had a Little Lamb Contributed to Thanksgiving
Notably, Sarah Joseph Hale the author of the nursery rhyme, “Mary Had a Little Lamb” wrote letters to President Lincoln. Additionally, she did this for 17 years trying to convince the President to declare Thanksgiving as a National Holiday. Conversely, prior to this the only National holiday celebrations were Washington’s Birthday and Independence Day.
Thanksgiving and the TV Dinner
In 1953 the TV dinner was invented. That is to say, Swanson had 260 tons of leftover turkey from Thanksgiving and had no idea what to do with it. In fact, an employee suggested they should package in trays with side dishes and freeze.
Did you know there is a grocery store in Paris named “Thanksgiving”. In particular it sells US foods. Such as Skippy Peanut Butter, Jello Instant Pudding and Pop-Tarts. Thus, to make homesick ex-pats feel closer to home.
It’s Not Black Friday but Brown Friday
Thanksgiving day fun fact number 6. The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day for septic companies and plumbers. Thus, dubbed “Brown Friday”
