There’s WHAT in my Christmas Stocking?!
For those who celebrate Christmas, the traditions you remember and have carried on can be a combination of age-old customs, regional practices, and family rituals. One of the most beloved of these traditions is the act of hanging Christmas stockings by the fireplace, which are to be filled by “Santa” with small treats, gifts, and surprises.
One of the most enduring and symbolic items that often appears in stockings is the humble orange. But why an orange, and what does this fruity gift have to do with Christmas?

The tradition of placing oranges in Christmas stockings is thought to date back to the 19th century, though some elements of the story stretch further back in time. The most commonly cited origin links the practice to St. Nicholas, the 4th-century bishop who later became the inspiration for Santa Claus. According to one popular legend, St. Nicholas was known for his acts of kindness and generosity. In one story, he secretly provided dowries for three poor sisters who were unable to marry because of their poverty. St. Nicholas is said to have dropped gold coins into their stockings, which were drying by the fire.
Over time, this act of generosity became associated with the tradition of stocking gifts. The gold coins were eventually replaced with small gifts and treats, but the symbolism of wealth, generosity, and good fortune remained. Oranges, which were once considered a luxury item due to their rarity and cost, became a popular choice as a stand-in for the gold coins in stockings. Also, if you had access to oranges or any fresh fruit during the winter, you were thought to have wealth and abundance. Beyond its association with luxury, the orange also carried symbolic meaning in many cultures. The fruit’s round shape and vibrant color were seen as symbols of prosperity, good health, and happiness. The tradition of placing an orange in a Christmas stocking was believed to bring good fortune for the year ahead, promoting health and vitality during the cold months.
As the world changed and oranges became more common and affordable, the practice of placing them in Christmas stockings faded somewhat. By the mid-20th century, oranges were no longer considered a luxury item, and stocking stuffers began to focus on other treats, such as chocolates, small toys, or candy canes.
However, in recent years, the tradition has seen a revival. Many families continue to place an orange in each Christmas stocking as a nostalgic reminder of the past, while others have re-embraced the practice as a way to share in the symbolism of generosity, good health, and fortune. In some households, the orange has become an important part of the tradition, alongside chocolate coins, small gifts, and other festive treats.
Whether you are placing a bright orange in a Christmas stocking for its symbolism, its nostalgic value, or simply because it’s a sweet and healthy treat, the tradition has remained a cherished part of many holiday celebrations. The orange serves as a reminder of the generosity, warmth, and good fortune that are central to the Christmas season, making it a delightful and meaningful addition to any Christmas stocking. In a world that is increasingly focused on consumerism, the simple gesture of giving an orange remains a beautiful reminder of what Christmas is truly about: sharing love, warmth, and a bit of joy with those we care about.
Have you ever found an orange in your stocking? Do you – acting as Santa’s assistant, of course – put oranges in Christmas stockings? We hope you have a wonderful holiday season!
